3D Motion Capture for Golf: What it Actually Shows You

Video shows you what the swing looked like from one angle. 3D motion capture shows you exactly what every body segment did, when, and at what speed. The difference is the difference between an opinion and a measurement.
What 3D Motion Capture Measures
- Pelvis rotation and tilt at every position in the swing
- Thorax rotation, side bend, and turn ratio relative to pelvis
- Hand path and arm plane
- Kinematic sequence — the order in which segments accelerate
- Peak rotational speed of pelvis, thorax, lead arm, and club
- Timing gaps between segments — the engine of clubhead speed
Why it Matters in Coaching
Most amateur swing faults come from the same handful of motion problems: pelvis stalls in transition, thorax turns faster than pelvis when it should be the other way around, hand path drifts in or out, kinematic sequence runs out of order. 3D shows all of this in clean numbers, which means coaching becomes specific instead of generic.
Real Example
A student in our Austin studio came in losing 25 yards off the driver. Video looked fine. The 3D data showed pelvis peak rotational speed was 380 deg/s — about 100 deg/s below average for his speed range. The fix was a lead leg posting drill, not a grip or path change. Two months later his pelvis speed was 470 and his drives were back to where they should be.

Video can show position. It cannot show speed, timing, or sequence reliably. A coach can spot a few of those things by eye on a great day. 3D measures all of them every swing, which is why every Tour player has access to it.

What does 3D motion capture do for golf?
It measures exactly how your body moves through the swing in real numbers — pelvis rotation, thorax turn, side bend, hand path, kinematic sequence, and segment speeds. This converts subjective coaching into measurable, repeatable change.
Is 3D motion capture better than video?
For swing diagnosis, yes. Video shows position from one angle. 3D shows position, speed, timing, and sequence for every body segment on every swing. They work best together, with 3D as the measurement and video as the visual reference.
Do you need 3D motion capture to improve?
No, but it dramatically accelerates measurable change. Coaches without 3D can still help most amateurs improve. With 3D, the time to identify the right change drops from weeks to one session.
Where can I get a 3D motion capture swing analysis in Austin?
ATX Golf Performance uses 3D motion capture on every Game Evaluation and coaching session in our Suite 103 studio in West Lake Hills, combined with radar launch monitor and force plate data.
