Nick Dunlap's Two Key Moves
What a win by amateur Nick Dunlap at the American Express Championship!
He’s etched his name in the history books by becoming the first amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win on the PGA Tour.
Whenever a player has success, I'm always interested in exploring the elements that contributed to their achievement.
One of the key elements to Nick's success is his masterful use of his lower body during his swing. There are two aspects of this technique that stand out:
Right Knee Flexion During Backswing: Nick's ability to maintain a flexed right knee during his backswing is noteworthy. This technique allows him to create a stable base with is weight on the ball of his right foot at the top of his swing. By keeping his right knee flexed, Nick puts himself an a great position to make an effective downswing move.
Clearing Left Hip and Straightening Left Leg at Impact: The second aspect that deserves attention is how Nick clears his left hip and straightens his left leg at the point of impact. This movement is crucial as it helps generate a significant amount of power and speed in his swing, culminating in a powerful and precise impact position.
Nick's technique serves as a perfect example of how the lower body can be used as a platform to enhance the golf swing, combining stability, power, and precision.
