Golf in Austin Heat: How to Practice June Through September

Golfer training in Austin, Texas summer heat with proper hydration and gear

Austin golf does not pause for summer. It just punishes anyone who treats July like April. Below is the smart-practice playbook our students follow June through September.

The Schedule That Actually Works

  • Rounds: tee off before 8 am or after 6 pm
  • Range work: same windows, never 11 am to 5 pm
  • Technique work: move indoors — your form deteriorates at 105°F
  • Short game: shaded greens early morning or covered bays

Hydration Before You Feel Thirsty

By the time you feel thirsty in Austin summer, you are already 1 to 2% dehydrated, which costs you 5 to 10% of swing speed and most of your decision-making. Start hydrating with electrolytes the night before, and keep drinking on a clock during the round, not based on thirst.

What Heat Does to Your Swing

  • Grip pressure increases unconsciously — hands swell, clubs feel small
  • Tempo accelerates as fatigue compounds
  • Posture collapses through the back nine
  • Decision-making degrades faster than ball striking

Indoor Coaching as the Summer Default

From mid-June through mid-September, most of our coaching in Austin shifts indoors entirely. The studio is 72°F, the data is the same, and we save the outdoor work for cooler mornings on actual courses. It is the most efficient time of year for swing change, not the worst.

Gear That Actually Helps

  • Cooling neck wraps and ice towels
  • Light-colored UPF long sleeves (cooler than short sleeves in direct sun)
  • Wide-brim hats over visors
  • Two gloves alternating — wet glove ruins feel
  • Electrolyte tabs, not just water

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to play golf in Austin summer?

Yes, with smart scheduling. Tee off before 8 am or after 6 pm, hydrate with electrolytes before you feel thirsty, and avoid the 11 am to 5 pm window when heat index regularly exceeds 105°F. Carts and shade help, but timing is everything.

When is the hottest time to avoid golf in Austin?

From late June through early September, the 11 am to 5 pm window is consistently the most dangerous. Heat index frequently exceeds 105°F, and physical and mental performance degrade rapidly.

Should I take lessons indoors during summer in Austin?

Yes. Indoor coaching with launch monitor and motion capture is often the most productive coaching environment during peak Austin summer. The data is the same, the studio stays cool, and fatigue does not corrupt the swing changes you are working on.

How do I stop losing distance in summer?

Dehydration is the biggest culprit. Even 1 to 2% dehydration costs swing speed. Start hydrating with electrolytes the night before, drink on a clock during rounds, and use the early or late windows when humidity drops and your body recovers faster between shots.
